No, this is not a post about those are related to us. Rather, this is a post about the relativity of words. One word in particular. And that is the word "normal".
T, my oldest, is a smart ass. We all love him immensely, but he is, and he knows it. (He gets it from his Dad.) He's actually the one who reminded me the other day, when I was hobbling down the stairs and remarked to a friend on the phone how I couldn't go down the stairs like a "normal person" (I had sprained my ankle). So he, being the eternal smart ass he is, said "Define normal mom". See, we had already had the conversation about how the word "normal" is all relative. Here's my reasoning behind this. I was on a raw food board a while back, and people were worried about not appearing "normal" to those around them because of their choice to follow a raw food program. I, not being one to hold back, chimed in. It went something like this:
"By society's standards, I'm not normal, and haven't been for quite some time. I was a female in the military (minority), I had my kids back-to-back when everyone else around me was saying it was better to space them out. We're a military family, so we move around a bit. We decided to homeschool. We have a child with autism, and we homeschool him too. We don't do vaccines anymore. So by the time we got around to raw foods, we were so far removed from society's outlook on 'normal', that going raw wasn't anything. But this is OUR 'normal'. It's what is 'normal' to us in our life. You get to define what's 'normal' for yours."
See? It really is one of those relative words. So, what defines YOUR normal? YOU get to define it, no one else! :)
